I’ve been on homeschool Facebook groups and blogs for years. I guess you could say I know a lot about homeschooling. Only I don’t. I’m like one of those people who just graduated from teaching school who claim to know all there is to know about teaching. Only they don’t. Because they have zero experience.
So when I scrolled through the homeschool support groups late at night looking for moms similar to me (“Help! are my kids really going to be unsocialized if we homeschool?”), I scoffed at the moms who said their house is a little bit messier, their dinners a little less gourmet, their laundry a little less done, because they homeschool. I would never be one of those moms, I thought. I have it together. Once I quit my job and start homeschooling, I will have so much free time, I won’t know what to do with myself.
But here’s the funny thing. I started homeschooling on Friday. And I can’t seem to find the time to do. Anything. Else. My house looks like it did when we just moved in. You literally have to climb over boxes and bubble wrap just to get through the front door. My laundry is still sitting on the floor of my bedroom, waiting to be folded from Thursday night. I haven’t had the time to cook one real meal (unless you count noodles and cheese). So folks? I’ll admit it. Mama needs recess. I learned real quick that I can’t be on all the time. Cue Planet Earth on Netflix. And the Who Was? show. And the Magic School Bus. And that’s ok.
